Starred Review: 5 out of 5 stars

I’ve just recently started to read more Christian fiction. As with Deeanne Gist, who I read on a recommendation from Joy at Edgy Inspirational Romance, I picked up Jenny B. Jones’s Save the Date. Joy wasn’t the only person recommending the book, and I began seeing it everywhere, but it was Joy’s suggestion that she pictured Tom Welling [photo here] as our male hero, Alex, that caught my attention. If you know anything about me, you know I’m a huge “Smallville” fan. And a Clark Kent fan. And a Tom Welling as Clark Kent in “Smallville” fan. So that mention pretty much solidified it for me that I was going to read the book.

    Challenge: Off the Shelf

Honestly, I’m not a huge mystery fan. Oh, I’ve read them. In fact, when I was in middle/high school, I went through must of The Cat Who… genre mystery series. But I don’t read much anymore. Now before you go telling me that Deeanne Gist is a Christian romance author, I know it already. The other fiction of hers I’ve read (Maid to Match, Deep in the Heart of Trouble, Measure of a Lady) is of the historical romance sort. Beguiled, however, is set in contemporary Charleston and is as much of a mystery as it is a romance.

This book was a recommendation to me by several different people, and I avoided it because I wasn’t so sure I’d like it. I have an aversion to Christian fiction, not because it’s Christian but because it needs to be categorized as such. Can’t it be a novel about Christian characters, ideals, and morals without being sectioned off as a specific genre. It’s still fiction. Why does it matter if it’s also Christian?

I am obviously on a Deeanne Gist kick. Despite the fact that I spent much of this book singing its title to the tune of “Deep in the Heart of Texas,” I loved it.

This is my second Deeanne Gist book, and I’ve come to the conclusion that I love her. In fact, I’m sitting in B&N right now debating whether or not I should buy some books for my business trip on Monday. The way I see it is this: if I take books, I won’t write. And as my goal is to finish draft one by Thanksgiving, I should be writing. But I want to read.
