  • an essay on birthdays

    13

    Facebook says it’s my birthday.

This isn’t entirely true. Of course, it’s not entirely untrue either.

The truth is my birthday is February 29.

    The Holy Bible

I’ve been living in NYC since September, and one of the hardest things for me to do is find a church. It took me over a year living in California before I found a comfortable church. There are several things that make me comfortable on Sunday mornings for worship.

    • One is belief and agreement with a church’s mission, theology, and doctrine.
    • Two is a liturgical setting. I grew up Lutheran, and the way service runs, with the creed and the lessons and the gospel and the Lutheran liturgy and Communion and such — this is comfortable for me. This is the way I get the most out of my church time with God.
    • And three is a pastor who preaches well. I don’t like churches where the sermon is just a regurgitation of the Gospel, or an interpretation of the Gospel, because that’s what I do on my own in my studies of God’s Word. What I yearn for when it comes to a Sunday morning Sermon is a preacher who digs deeper, goes further, really expounds on God’s messages and Jesus’s teachings.

  • merry christmas!

    3

Most people share the account of Jesus’s birth written in the Gospel of Luke (Luke 2: 1-21). This is the Christmas story we likely hear at Christmas Eve service, isn’t it? I love it, but on this Christmas Day, I want to share the beginning of the Gospel of John, which gives us hope and peace that passes all understanding (Philippians 4:7) as we celebrate and reflect on the birth of our Savior (John 3:16).

    Nativity by Vanessa Fitzgerald

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. [...]

The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

    - John 1:1-3, 9-14

I wish you all a happy and blessed Christmas!

    Self-Portrait

    a self-portrait

I have a great new camera. My parents gave it to me for Christmas, and I love it. I’ve already taken a lot of fantastic photos and learned a lot about photography by using it. In fact, I’d love to use it even more.

Here’s the thing — I didn’t have anything exciting to take photos of 2 weeks ago when I was living at home. I would take the camera everywhere and never take a photo because nothing was exciting. I had my cats and the books I was reading and lazing about watching movies to take photos of.

  • nyc, what is it about you

    3

So I don’t really usually talk about personal things besides my writing and some anecdotes, such as the post about my adorable cat, Lola, but I’m going to take a short entry here to talk about myself.

Tomorrow I’m starting a new job. A dream job, really. I’m going to be working in publishing, something I always hoped for but never truly believe would happen. But I have a job, and I start tomorrow, and yesterday I moved to New York City. I’m staying with college friends in Brooklyn, nervous about the long walk to the subway station, and anxious about day one tomorrow. But I am very, very excited.
