  • great poetry reading day

Western Wind: An Introduction to PoetryAccording to my friend David Winnick, April 28 is Great Poetry Reading Day. Now I’m not really that big of a poetry reader on a regular basis, though I have been reading more and more lately because of my work with Margaret’s Hyacinth Girl Press.

But since it’s an entire day dedicated to reading poetry, I might very well dig out the poetry anthology I used way back in undergrad for my Introduction to Creative Writing class. It has a great collection of poems and poets that cross all the generations and themes and such. I’m bound to find something in it that a) I haven’t read yet and b) I really like.

  • read more and you win trivia night

    4

My friends and I are sometimes sporadic with our trivia nights, but when we do get together, I always have a good time. I have an even better time when I know the answers and can contribute to the overall team score. It’s true that I know a lot of random things, and that’s one of the best things about team pub trivia — everyone can contribute to some of the categories.

I have 23 days and 5 books to go … My 2011 Reading List!

I’ve got The Future of Us and Nora Roberts’ second Chesapeake Bay novel, Rising Tides coming in at the library. And I’m currently reading Lisa McMann’s The Unwanteds, but I’m open to suggestions of what else to read to hit my 100-book mark. Help!

Also, how are you doing with your 2011 reading challenges?

I’ve been meaning to write about this for a while now, mostly because I just did a big chunk of re-reading. Why would I do that, you ask, when I have a ridiculous amount of books on my physical TBR bookcase? The truth is, I have no idea. But in reality, there are a few books and series that I tend to graviate back to even though I’ve already read them before.

Most of the time, once I’ve read something, even when I’ve enjoyed it, the book returns to my shelf and I don’t pick it out again. This is one of the reasons I keep my read books and my TBR books separate. I like to read new things, and how can I read new things when I’m constantly reading old things that I’ve read before? Still, there are times when all I want to do is get back into bed (as it were, you know, since I read in bed) with those familiar, wonderful characters that I consider my friends.

  • books blast from the past!

    6

This was originally posted on Every Girl Blog, a blog-zine for girls that has unfortunately since closed.

Remember when you were in elementary school and had to read those award-winning books all the time? Sarah, Plain and Tall, The Indian in the Cupboard, Island of the Blue Dolphins, Hatchet, just to name a few. Those books never had anything to do with REAL LIFE, did they? In fact, you wanted to do anything else besides read them. But then you discovered other books, and they changed your life.
